Purpose: The current study seeks to determine and analyze the involvement of public libraries in safeguarding indigenous knowledge from global sources.
Method: The current study is purposeful and qualitative, utilizing a meta-synthesis approach. Through the use of meta-synthesis, the study identified the role of public libraries in preserving local knowledge and presented a model for the preservation of indigenous knowledge in public libraries in Iran. The research's inclusion criteria encompass the period from 2005 to 2022, with a thematic focus on resources centred around public libraries. The research population consisted of English articles and theses available in scientific databases. Data analysis was conducted using the MaxQda software. The validity of the meta-synthesis method was evaluated using a critical evaluation tool, and the reliability was determined through an agreement method between two coders.
Results: 5 categories, 15 concepts, and 394 codes were established through the coding process. The findings indicated that public libraries play essential and fundamental roles in the preservation of indigenous knowledge, including promoting the sustainable development of communities, engaging in intra-organizational activities, interacting with indigenous populations, facilitating external communication, and addressing preservation challenges.
Conclusions: The current study utilized a meta-synthesis method to extract and calculate the role of public libraries in the preservation of indigenous knowledge. This result demonstrates a holistic understanding of how public libraries contribute to the preservation of indigenous knowledge for information science professionals, public library authorities, decision-makers, and stakeholders in the realm of indigenous knowledge management and public libraries. Overall, the findings of this research have the potential to reinforce the preservation efforts within the local community and among decision-makers involved in indigenous knowledge.
