Abstract
Purpose:Artificial Intelligence-based services have recently attracted the attention of many service organizations, such as public libraries. Leveraging this technology requires identifying its opportunities and challenges. Therefore, this study aims to identify and prioritize the opportunities and challenges of AI in the provision of public library services. Methodology:This research is applied in terms of purpose and employs an exploratory mixed-methods approach. The qualitative phase utilized synthesis research and systematic review methods, while the quantitative phase employed the fuzzy-delphi method. The research population consisted of relevant articles and experts in the fields of AI and public libraries. Data collection tools included checklists and data extraction forms. Findings:A total of 24 opportunities were identified across four main categories: "transformation in services and enhancement of public and reference service quality","optimizing technical services and resource processing","improving management and reducing costs",and"digital services and information technology". Furthermore, 15 challenges were identified across five main categories: "technical and infrastructural challenges","human and skill-related challenges","ethical, legal, and security challenges","financial and economic challenges",and"cultural, organizational, and managerial challenges". According to the delphi results, the most significant opportunity was "analysis of user behavior and information data",while the most significant challenge was the "lack of a macro-level strategy" in public libraries. Originality/Values:This study provides a comprehensive perspective on the application, services, and challenges of implementing AI in public libraries. The adoption of AI can guide public libraries toward transforming into intelligent and innovative learning centers. However, the realization of this vision is only possible if infrastructural, educational, and ethical challenges are addressed.
