Abstract
The present study examines the status of collection building in public high school libraries in Tehran in the academic year 2008-2010. 99 high schools were selected from 296 public girls' high schools by random sampling and studied using a survey method. The instrument of this study is a questionnaire with 23 closed questions and 2 open questions. The findings showed that 40 libraries (45.5%) are managed by librarians. "Lack of attention and importance to the librarianship job" is mentioned as the most important reason for not hiring librarians in school libraries. The annual growth of resources is less than one percent on average. The chi-square statistical test showed that the presence of a specialist librarian in the library is related to the creation of a collection that satisfies the visitors (p=0.038 and X2=6.54). Religious books make up the largest share of the collection, while entertainment and recreational books make up the smallest share. Having a library education does not play a role in the collection's thematic priority. "Recommendations from patrons" is the first priority as a tool for selecting books, and "lack of budget" is the most important problem in building a collection.
