Abstract
The present study aims to identify the appropriate elements and features of content management systems for Iranian university library websites. Considering the basic questions, this study was conducted in three stages in 2006: In the first stage, the status of the world's top university library websites was examined using a researcher-made list. In the second stage, the ability of content management systems available in the international market was examined using the list obtained from the results of the first stage of the study. In the third stage, the status of Iranian university library websites was examined using the list of the first stage. The results obtained from the first stage of the study showed that on average, 44.40 percent of the expected elements in university library websites were present in all the websites studied. The results of the second stage showed that the content management systems studied do not cover 25 percent of the elements required in university library websites in general. The results obtained from the third phase of the research showed that on average only 20% of the elements examined in List No. 1 were present on the websites of Iranian academic libraries. Comparing the results obtained from the third phase with the results obtained from the first phase of the research indicates that there is a significant difference between the current status of Iranian academic library websites and the websites of academic libraries examined in the first phase.
