هدف: هدف این پژوهش دستیابی به مدل مفهومی کتابخانه‌های عمومی ایران به‌مثابۀ مراکز اجتماعی بر اساس نظریۀ حوزۀ عمومی یورگن هابرماس است.
روش: پژوهش حاضر بهلحاظ هدف کاربردی، از نظرِ نحوۀ گردآوری داده‌ها پیمایشی، و بهلحاظ ماهیت داده‌ها یک تحقیق آمیخته از نوع اکتشافی است که با رویکرد نظام‌مندِ نظریۀ زمینه‌ای انجام شد. در بخش کیفی، ابتدا با انجام 33 مصاحبه و 2 گروه کانونی، عوامل مؤثر شناسایی و استخراج شدند. اعتبار این عوامل از طریق شاخص نسبت روایی محتوایی (CVR) و پایایی آن‌ها نیز با آزمون ضریب کاپای فلیس اثبات شد. در بخش کمّی، پایایی ابزار با استفاده از پرسش‌نامه‌ای 117گویه‌ای با میانگین 86/0 تأیید شد. در نهایت، با استفاده از روش آنتروپی شانون، عوامل رتبه‌بندی شدند.
یافته‌ها: هفت عاملِ نیروی انسانی، ساختمان و تجهیزات، اجتماعی، سیاسی، ساختاری، فرهنگی و اقتصادی در مدل کتابخانه‌های عمومی به‌عنوان مراکز اجتماعی اثرگذارند که عامل فرهنگی بیشترین و عامل اقتصادی کمترین تأثیر را دارد. همۀ عوامل دارای روایی محتوایی بیشتر از 33/0 و ضریب کاپای بیشتر از 7/0 بوده و لذا از روایی و پایایی لازم برخوردار بودند. مدل مفهومی پژوهش نیز در شش بخش ترسیم شد.
اصالت/ارزش: نظریۀ حوزۀ عمومی از جمله نظریات جامعه‌شناسی است که علی‌رغم ارتباطش با کتابخانه‌های عمومی، در داخل کشور کمتر مورد توجه قرار گرفته است. این کتابخانه‌ها می‌توانند از طریق اجزای حوزۀ عمومی، با برقراری ارتباط بین دولت و ملت، مردم را از تصمیمات دولتی آگاه کنند و آن‌ها را به چالش بکشانند. در این حالت، کتابخانه عاملی خواهد شد برای رشد و خودشکوفاییِ روزافزون شهروندان و همچنین عاملی برای ارتقای رفاه عمومی و تثبیت صلح و آرامش.
